Celebrating Back British Farming Day with St. Ewe Free Range Eggs: Supporting the Heart of British Agriculture

September 11 2024

Today, as we celebrate Back British Farming Day, we at St. Ewe Free Range Eggs want to shine a spotlight on the incredible farmers who are the backbone of British agriculture. This day is more than just a date on the calendar; it’s a powerful reminder of the essential role that farming plays in our lives, our communities, and our nation’s economy.

Why Back British Farming Day Matters

Back British Farming Day, now in its ninth year, is an initiative by the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) to celebrate and support the UK’s vibrant farming sector. It’s a day to acknowledge the hard work, dedication, and passion of British farmers who not only provide us with nutritious food but also steward our countryside, manage 71% of the nation’s landscape, and uphold the highest standards of animal welfare.

On September 11th, MPs and Peers will gather at the House of Commons for the annual NFU reception, proudly wearing the iconic wheatsheaf pin badge—a symbol of their commitment to supporting British farming. We encourage everyone to get involved by sharing their love for British food and farming on social media using the hashtag #BackBritishFarmingDay.

St. Ewe: Proudly Supporting British Farmers

At St. Ewe, we are more than just egg producers; we are passionate advocates for British farming. Our CEO, Rebecca Tonks, plays a significant role in shaping the future of UK agriculture through her active involvement with the NFU Poultry Board, The Huers Club, The Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Food Board, The Central Egg Agency and The Great South West Board. Bex’s philosophy is simple yet profound: “Without happy farmers, there cannot be content hens.”

This belief is at the core of everything we do. We are committed to ensuring the welfare of both our farmers and our hens, by working closely with our farmers to maintain the highest standards of welfare and quality. Our eggs are not just a product; they are the result of a collaborative effort that begins with the care and expertise of British family farmers.

The Best of British Farming

British farming is something to be proud of. Did you know that the UK produces over 700 different types of cheese? Or that a field of wheat the size of a football pitch produces enough grain to make 11,500 loaves of bread? And let’s not forget about the 2 billion portions of frozen peas produced each year, most of which make it to the factory and through the freezing process in under two hours!*

As a nation, we consume an average of 192 eggs per person per year—that’s enough to make 1,152 fairy cakes! At St. Ewe, we take pride in contributing to this statistic, ensuring that every egg we produce meets the highest standards of quality and taste.

How You Can Support British Farming

This Back British Farming Day, we invite you to join us in celebrating the farmers who make it all possible. Here are a few simple ways you can show your support:

  • Share content from NFU’s social media pages and use the hashtag #BackBritishFarmingDay
  • Tell us why you love British food or why you support British farming
  • Nominate others to share their stories and get involved in the celebration

By supporting British farming, you’re not just supporting the economy; you’re also backing the sustainable practices that protect our environment and ensure that future generations can enjoy the same high-quality food we do today.
