We’ve always believed that great eggs start with great care—for our girls, our farmers, our people, and our planet. Now, we’re taking that commitment to the next level by announcing that St. Ewe Free Range Eggs is officially B Corp Certified!
This milestone makes us the first egg packer in Europe to achieve B Corp status, joining a global movement of businesses committed to using their influence as a force for good. But what does that really mean? And why does it matter to you? Let’s crack into it.
What Is B Corp Certification?
B Corp (short for Benefit Corporation) is an internationally recognised accreditation awarded to companies that meet the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility, transparency, and accountability. To become certified, businesses must pass the B Impact Assessment, scoring at least 80 points across five key areas: governance, workers, community, environment, and customers.
The certification isn’t just a rubber stamp, it’s a rigorous and ongoing commitment. In fact, over 50% of businesses don’t achieve B Corp certification on their first attempt, highlighting the dedication and commitment needed to meet its high standards*.
Why Did We Pursue B Corp Certification?
At St. Ewe, we believe in doing what’s right, not what’s easy. As a female-owned, family-run business, integrity has always been at our core - prioritising hen welfare, producer relationships, ethical farming, and employee wellbeing in everything we do. Achieving B Corp certification reflects this commitment, ensuring we are continuously measured, held accountable, and always striving to improve our impact on people and the planet.
As the first egg packer in Europe to achieve B Corp status, we’re setting a new standard for ethical and transparent food production. This milestone reinforces our leadership in UK food security and sustainability, demonstrating that business success can go hand in hand with social and environmental responsibility. By joining the B Corp movement, we hope to inspire others in the industry to raise the bar, proving that a more sustainable food system is not only possible - it’s essential.
How We Earned Our B Corp Badge
The B Corp certification process is no yolk! This assessment requires businesses to prove their commitment through data-backed evidence and ongoing improvements. Here’s where we shone:
- Governance: We’re built on strong foundations, with a mission lock for ethical decision-making, transparent business structure, and a focus on purpose-led goals.
- Workforce: Our employees are at the heart of what we do. From fair wages and wellbeing focused benefits to a people-first culture, we go the extra mile. We ensure that St. Ewe is a great place to work and staff bonuses reward all our hardworking team.
- Customers: Whether it’s retailers, restaurants, or home cooks, we’re committed to providing the best eggs while promoting ethical and responsible food choices.
- Community: We support our network of British farmers, championing sustainable agriculture and ensuring that everyone in our supply chain is treated fairly with a focus on longevity. We’re also proud to continually support our local communities, through donations, volunteering and sponsorships.
- Environment: While we’re proud of the work that we have already done around carbon reduction and biodiversity, we know there’s always more work to do. Over the next 24 months, we’re doubling down on sustainability—working closely with our farmers to implement even greener outcomes and support food securing in the UK.
“Becoming part of the B Corp movement is just the beginning of our journey at St. Ewe. This process has sharpened our focus, strengthened our values and culture, and guided us in implementing social and sustainable measures to ensure our business is fit to feed generations to come.
We are all about nutrition - providing high-quality food to improve people's lives - and we believe B Corp certification is a vital part of this journey. It amplifies our message, helps build trust, and confirms our commitment to delivering food in a truly sustainable way.” – Bex Tonks, Farmer & CEO, St. Ewe
What’s Next?
B Corp isn’t a one-and-done achievement – as we mentioned before it’s an ongoing commitment to continuous improvement, to our people, to our producers and to our planet. As part of this journey, we’ll be:
- Strengthening collaboration with our producers to improve environmental outcomes and uphold the very best hen welfare standards.
- Enhancing our employee policies and benefits to support a diverse workforce.
- Securing ways to further improve our positive environmental footprint across the supply chain.
- Encouraging more businesses in the food industry to take the leap and join the B Corp movement.
Why This Matters to You
If you care about where your food comes from, B Corp certification means you can trust that St. Ewe is making business decisions with purpose. Our research** shows that 60% of consumers are more likely to support B Corp-certified brands, and nearly half actively seek sustainable food and drink options. This means when you choose St. Ewe,
- you’re supporting better farming practices.
- you’re choosing food that prioritises hen welfare.
- you’re backing a business that reinvests in its people and the planet.
Why This Matters to Our Producers
Being a B Corporation means a commitment to fairness, transparency, and collaboration. It’s about making sure the delicious free-range eggs our farmers produce are valued and reach the market in the best possible condition. It also means being part of a global movement dedicated to making a positive impact - supporting sustainable farming, ethical business practices, and a better future for food production in the UK. By working in collaboration with our family farmers, we can drive meaningful change and ensure their hard work is recognised and rewarded.
Why This Matters to Our Team
For our team, B Corp certification is more than just a badge—it’s a promise. It means we’re committed to being a business with purpose, working as part of a wider community striving for a fairer, more sustainable world. It guarantees that we treat our employees with respect, pay them fairly, and provide a safe, meaningful workplace where everyone is valued. It also opens doors to new opportunities (whether that’s through training, innovation, or working groups within the B Corp network) so we can keep learning, improving, and making a real difference. Being a B Corp means standing up for what’s right, and that starts with us.
