According to our research, the nation still loves a classic. Lemon & sugar takes the top spot as the UK’s favourite topping (48%), followed by Nutella (28%) and Strawberries & cream (28%). However, savoury options like bacon & maple syrup (17.5%) and ham & cheese (10%) are gaining popularity too.

To help you avoid the common pitfalls of Pancake Day (burning, sticking, breaking. Yep, we know! We’ve all been there…) National Chef of the Year, Orry Shand, and St. Ewe Chef & Business Development Manager, Simon Allott, shared their expert advice with us. Here’s what they said:
- Use Fresh Ingredients – Start with St. Ewe free-range eggs for the best results.
- Want Them Rich? – Mixing with buttermilk will create richer, thicker pancakes.
- Don’t Overmix – Stir your eggs and flour first for a smooth paste, then add milk gradually.
- Let the Batter Rest – Allow it to sit for 5-15 minutes before cooking for fluffier pancakes.
- Preheat Your Pan – A heavy cast iron or non-stick pan works best.
- Oil Smartly – Swill hot oil around the pan, then pour any excess into the batter to prevent sticking.
- Use the Right Amount of Batter – A measuring cup ensures even pancakes.
- Flip at the Right Time – Look for bubbles forming before flipping (usually 2-3 minutes per side). Tip: Before you flip you can add chocolate and raspberries so they are almost inside, it’s delicious!
- Don’t Press Down – Pressing can make pancakes dense instead of fluffy.
- Keep Warm – If making a big batch, store your cooked pancakes in a warm oven until serving.
