St. Ewe X Jennifer Armitage: A Collaboration Rooted in Nature

06 Feb 2025

At St. Ewe Free Range Eggs, our ethos is all about connecting with the land, celebrating community, and embracing the rhythm of the seasons. To bring this vision to life, we partnered with Jennifer Armitage, a gifted Cornish illustrator whose work captures the essence of our beautiful surroundings and the heart of St. Ewe.

Jennifer created a series of bespoke illustrations which beautifully captures the view toward the St. Ewe village through the lens of three seasons: the crisp stillness of winter, the golden hues of autumn, and the vibrant energy of spring and summer.

Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming Jennifer back to our Packing Centre to unveil the transformed space after our walls were wrapped by Cornwall Signs. It was the perfect opportunity to sit down with her and explore her creative journey, the inspiration behind her designs, and her experience collaborating with us on this meaningful project.

Keep reading to discover how Jennifer’s artistry has beautifully brought the St. Ewe story to life, celebrating the values and vision that define who we are.

Can you tell us a bit about your creative journey? How did you get started as an illustrator?

I was very lucky to be born in Cornwall and grew up in a very artistic household. After school, I pursued various design courses, eventually earning a BA in Fashion Design at Falmouth University. Over time, my passion for illustration naturally developed. Working as a graphic designer for Seasalt Cornwall allowed me to hone my style, and later, I took the plunge to become self-employed with my business, Pure Cornish Design. This gave me the freedom to focus on creating illustrations inspired by Cornwall’s wild beauty. Now, alongside this I run my illustration business, Jennifer Armitage Illustration, selling a range of art prints, gifts and homeware that I sell online, alongside commissions for fantastic local businesses, including St. Michael’s Mount and, of course, St. Ewe Eggs.

What’s your creative process like? Can you walk us through how you approach a new project?

Whenever I’m creating an illustration, an initial visit to the location is essential. I take photographic references and immerse myself in the area’s atmosphere, noting its wildflowers, wildlife, and colours. Back in my design studio, I use an illustration program to digitally freehand draw from these references and my memories. This process allows me to play with colours and techniques, resulting in bold and abstract designs.

What was your inspiration behind the artwork you’ve created for us?

The St. Ewe team took me to their home farm, where the brand began, and I was immediately inspired by the stunning landscape. The view from the farmhouse across the valley was breathtaking, rich with wildlife and flowers. Learning about the seasonal species that adorn the area throughout the year provided endless inspiration for the three seasonal variations. Meeting the happy, free-roaming hens on-site—each with its own personality—also played a big role in shaping my designs.

What challenges did you face while working on this project, and how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenge was fitting all the beautiful elements—plants, wildlife, Cornish details, and hens—into the illustrations without losing their bold composition. Sometimes, less is more with illustration, so we worked together to strike the perfect balance. The collaboration with the St. Ewe team made this process seamless.

Which of the illustrations you’ve created for us is your favourite, and why?

I’d have to say the Spring/Summer version. This season is when Cornwall truly comes to life, and it’s magical to watch nature emerge after winter. The fresh leaves, blooms, and colours are endlessly inspiring. Plus, hens are at their happiest during this time, enjoying sunbathing and dust baths—a joy to watch and capture in my work.

Do you have any advice for aspiring illustrators who want to work with brands?

Develop your unique style and be confident in it. A distinct style will help you stand out and attract brands. Take on board your client’s vision but don’t be afraid to be bold in your interpretation. Most importantly, have fun! Illustration is an adventure in creativity.

What do you think about the application of the artwork in our building, after seeing it for the first time?

It’s amazing! The artwork truly brings the office to life and reflects the warm, welcoming nature of the St. Ewe family. The boldness of wrapping an entire wall makes a big impact, showcasing your values and injecting life into the building. You can even see it from the car park—it’s a real statement piece.

What are your thoughts about seeing the illustrations on our new website?

I love it! The bold, engaging artwork complements the website perfectly, reflecting all the wonderful changes you’ve made. It’s beautiful and so inviting.

If you could see your work anywhere, where would it be?

I’d love to see my illustrations on more large-scale applications—walls, lorries, and van graphics, for example. Outside of St. Ewe, I dream of collaborating with more iconic Cornish businesses and landmarks.

What is your favourite way to eat eggs?

I love baking and make a cake every Sunday, so cake is my number one! I also enjoy poached eggs and egg mayo sandwiches.
